From director James Gray (We Own The Night) comes one of the most interesting movies of 2017.

The Lost City of Z is about real-life explorer Colonel Percival Fawcett. It follows his expedition into The Amazon and his obsession with finding The Lost City. Gray creates the feel of an old Hollywood film, and it works beautifully. It was produced by Amazon and you can tell they were shooting for an Oscar contender. Much of the movie is filmed on location, so I can only imagine that the cast and crew had to deal with some harsh conditions. I’d really love to see a “Making Of” documentary as it is incredibly impressive that this did not hinder performances. The cast is superb and there are a lot of big names here. Foremost, we have the captivating Charlie Hunnam as Percival Fawcett. His performance carries this film and kept me invested the entire time. His obsession consumes him as he goes deeper into the jungle. Robert Pattinson stars as Henry Costin and is easily the best performance of his I’ve seen, granted I haven’t watched Good Time yet.  He’s nearly unrecognizable in the role. Tom Holland plays Jack Fawcett, Percival’s son. We now know him as Spider-Man, but the scenes he shares with Hunnam are some of the best moments I have seen in cinema this past year. I was also impressed with the extras and would be interested to know their backgrounds. There were times where I felt like I was watching a documentary, and I mean that in the best kind of way.

The Lost City of Z is currently available on DVD, Blu-Ray and streaming through Amazon Prime.
