Vinny’s Comic Picks of the Week!
Eternity Girl #1 (DC Comics)
Runners Up: Mister Miracle #7 (DC Comics), Secret Weapons: Owen’s Story #0 (Valiant Comics)
From DC’s Young Animal comes Eternity Girl, written by Magdalene Visaggio (Kim and Kim) with art by the Eisner Award winning Sonny Liew. I’ll be the first to admit that, though I have read many genres in comics, I am first and foremost a superhero guy. Thus, it wasn’t until the back-up features in the Milk Wars mini-series that I read any of Visaggio’s work. Though the aforementioned back-ups were intriguing, and introduced Caroline Sharp prior to this issue, it is within it that the concept is proven and Visaggio shows her value to the imprint. Since day one, Young Animal has really captured the magic of pre and early Vertigo fare, embracing the basic concepts of superheroism and adding a bit of the bizarre and macabre. Eternity Girl is no different, and proves to be the line’s strongest launch since Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye. In a few months, this book could be the line’s flagship title. Sonny Liew’s distinct style pairs well with the quirky narrative and, though runs under Gerard Way’s imprint don’t seem to last too long, I hope the Visaggio and Liew get a good shot to develop their synergy further. Eternity Girl could be the type of book that the industry needs to ignite sales and interest from readers new and old.
Tom King and Mitch Gerads feel like old friends on this list, making yet another appearance with the latest issue of Mister Miracle. The bizarre ride continues into its second half and focuses on an important moment in Free’s life with Barda. What really stands out here is how adept the team translates some incredibly niche comedy. They walk the age old razor’s edge between smart and dumb, coming out on top. Seeing the Female Furies out of their element, and with a nice touch of personality, is a moment few Fourth World fans will forget. Though early issues made a deep impression on me, when the book is completed, this may well end up my favorite issue.
Last up is the latest Secret Weapons special, focusing on Owen. Reuniting the original creative team of Eric Heisserer, Raul Allen and Patricia Martin, this #0 highlights a character with one of the most amusing powers in comic book history. Heisserer is set to make a huge impact in the Valiant Universe with Harbinger Wars 2, and checking out his Secret Weapons is a must going forward.
